Today’s Quote Of The Day comes from a Brit called Herbert George Wells, or H.G. Wells (1866-1946); a novelist, teacher, historian, journalist, writer of textbooks and wearer of big mustaches. He is best known for his science fiction novels (he is often referred to as one of the fathers of science fiction) including The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897) and The War of the Worlds (1898). The latter was adapted into seven films and a rather infamous radio broadcast airing on October 30th, 1938 on CBS, narrated and directed by Orson Welles.

The program was presented as a series of news bulletins reporting that an alien invasion was in progress. It created quite a panic among dum dums who never read or heard of the book (and didn’t appreciate it was the night before Halloween), believing that the events were real and martians were coming to steal their wives/women/cousins and eat their brains. (They would have gone home hungry.) It’s not clear how much chaos was actually caused that night; it’s been said over the years that the overall level of panic was over exaggerated. Hopefully when the real thing happens they’ll be more friendly. “It’s a Cookbook!”
