Today’s quote comes from Harper Lee (April 28, 1926 – February 19, 2016); an American novelist who wrote one book, To Kill a Mockingbird published in 1960. If you’re destined to be a one hit wonder, this is how you do it. Perhaps you were forced to read it in school like I was. But if not, you probably should have been, because it is an important and amazing novel. You may have even seen the film adaptation starring Gregory Peck, which is also fantastic. Harper Lee was also known for working with her friend, Truman Capote, to help research his book In Cold Blood.
Another novel called Go Set a Watchman written by Lee in the mid 50’s, was found later by her lawyer in 2011 and dubiously published in 2015 as a “newly discovered sequel” (claiming that it was with Lee’s blessing, even though close friends described Harper as “in a wheelchair in an assisted living center, nearly deaf and blind.”) It was later confirmed to actually be a first draft of To Kill a Mockingbird. (Have you demanded your money back yet?) Apparently Lee was serious when she said that she would never write another book.
